Filming 1 for Commercial Project
Today my group did the first part of our filming for the commercial project. The filming was done outside, on our school's track. I was the primary actor in our project, since there are only two of us. When we began filming, we first had to work out the minutiae of how we wanted to handle everything procedurally- if we were to take shots in order or do all of the running shots first, then the drinking shots, then the Gatorade. We also worked out where our cameraman would be standing for each shot and how he would be panning or zooming. After these details were settled, we began filming. We'd decided on doing the running first, so we did a few different takes for each section. There are 3 main shots of running in the first half, so we took these shots first. I started from a similar point of the track each time and jogged to an orange mark further down the track each time, which served as our "finish line." We had to do several retakes of this, and eventually modified our procedure slightly, so in the new process I only jogged to a certain point about halfway in between the starting point and the orange mark. After this point, our perspective shifted to a different point on the track, a medium long shot from behind as opposed to a side-scrolling pan. From here, I jogged to the orange mark. After perfecting this sequence, we moved on to the next running sequence. In this sequence, I start at the same position as I originally did, with the camera closer to and behind me. I then ran to the same orange mark, but notably faster than before. This is to represent the difference after drinking the Gatorade. After we got this take, we moved on to the actual drinking shots. These consisted of an over-the-shoulder of me opening the Gatorade bottle, and then a tilting side shot as I drank it. Both of these actions only required one take. Finally, we did a preliminary take of the stopwatch, which we would be splicing into the second, third, and fifth scenes. In these shots, I both held the running stopwatch on an iPhone and recorded the stopwatch with my other hand. These shots will likely be redone later, but by this point we were out of time and had to return to class.
