Research Blog for Music Video

For our music video, my group decided on using a song in the soft rock genre. These songs are wide ranging in terms of their content and "feel", but we are angling towards the more classical rock end of the spectrum.

Conventions: In these types of music videos, one can often see a sense of exhaustion or jadedness and increased emotional representation. 

CAMS: There is also a variety of camera angles and movements used in these types of music videos. Most frequent are shots which insert the viewer in the subject's perspective, such as over the shoulder shots. Other shots are commonly used, usually to instill a sense that the subject is an equal to and aware of the viewer. Shots used in this capacity include:

  • Wide shots
  • Low angles 
  • Extreme close ups
  • Eye level shots
  • Long shots

Sound: The sound- being the music itself- is usually either performed by the artist themselves and they are the focal point of the video, or it is played in conjunction with the story of the video to complement the visuals.

Editing: In the soft rock genre, the music videos are often preceded and succeeded by soft fade ins and outs, and there can be eye line matches in more cinematic-focused videos, again to put the viewer in the position of the subject.

Other Conventions: 

  • The costumes for soft rock videos are typically very reserved and plain, to convey the sense that the subject is a normal person with notes of weariness; however, they can also be garish and dramatic. 
  • The lighting is usually low and very dramatic, with the subject being in near or total obscurity. 
  • The acting is usually solemn and calm, though undercut with an urgency and sense of the subject being engaged, again playing into the morose, poignant message.
  •  Props are typically not featured in any instrumental capacity, as these videos are usually focused more on the subject's message or story more than anything else. 
  • The setting also typically reflects the darker emotive message, and would likely be somewhere less urban to fully emphasize the loneliness the subject may be trying to convey.

Filming 1 for Commercial Project

  Today my group did the first part of our filming for the commercial project. The filming was done outside, on our school's track. I was the primary actor in our project, since there are only two of us. When we began filming, we first had to work out the minutiae of how we wanted to handle everything procedurally- if we were to take shots in order or do all of the running shots first, then the drinking shots, then the Gatorade. We also worked out where our cameraman would be standing for each shot and how he would be panning or zooming. After these details were settled, we began filming. We'd decided on doing the running first, so we did a few different takes for each section. There are 3 main shots of running in the first half, so we took these shots first. Filming Blog for Final Project: Base Shots

  Due to time constraints posed by group members, we couldn't film many shots, so we filmed the few shots that took place in the area meant to be the Base in the actual film. To achieve the effect that my group was picturing, we used a nearby crafts store to acquire materials that we would use to create elements of the set that would perpetuate the futuristic aesthetic my group was aiming to create. I personally participated in the sketching and tracing of these materials while my groupmates helped arrange them. Since I finished my task before theirs, I helped look for some resources online which could create the radar effect that figured heavily into some of our scenes. I found several resources but there was one which was the obvious superior, so I went with that option as the one that my group would use. Title Research: Code 8 (2019)

  How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? Which ones? There are a total of 29 titles displayed during the opening sequences of Code 8, including individual acting credits and individual personal titles. The first title displayed is the name of the studio, followed by associated studios, the production company’s credit, various acting credits, the credits of the casting directors, and the visual effects supervisor. After this comes the credit for the creator of the music, the costume designer, the editor, the production designer, the director of photography, the co-producer and associate producers, various executive producers, the lead producer, the creators of the story and screenplay, the director, and finally, the movie title.
