Genre Decision Blog

My group has decided to go with a Sci-Fi film for our final project. This is because a Thriller and a War movie are not eligible as reasonable possibilities.

Thrillers rely completely on well-constructed props, sets, atmospheres, and costumes. Accomplishing this would be very difficult for our group and very limited budget. Particularly in the case of a monster, executing this idea would pose significant issues. We would need a well-designed costume to be shown only briefly throughout the entire project, which seems to be a waste of effort. Lighting presents its own problems as well. Conventionally, thrillers are dark, obscuring views to add anticipation. Our group believes this would be hard to accomplish as well, because we have very little experience filming in dark environments. The final product could come out too dark to be seen.

War movies require large sets of battlefields and many more actors than are in our group of 4. Even if we had the means to get more actors, scheduling would be extremely strenuous. Additionally, props for all those actors are required as well, including uniforms, weapons, and other items. The scale of conventional war movies is simply too large for our group to accomplish. This rules out the war genre for our final product.

In contrast to the difficulties presented by our other choices, Sci-Fi has costume possibilities the group could execute, with prop technological modifications to one’s body and a generally higher presence of technology being very reasonable. Sci-Fi also conventionally has shots which are easier to create, including low angles and close-ups. The only issue is aerial shots which are often seen as establishing shots. Sound motifs, which are also conventional, could be created with a synthesizer program on the computer used for editing. All else included in the research would be easy to manage.
