Genre Research: The Meg (2018)
Camera Angles and Movements: In The Meg, there are many uses of long and wide shots. This Emphasizes the size comparison of the meg with the regular people, as well as how large the meg is under water. There are also many high and low angle shots that are used to display the roles of power between the characters and the meg. There is also a usage of god’s eye view, before and during attacks to display size comparison and insight suspense.
Mis-En-Scene: The costumes mostly used by the characters are athletic style work clothes that show that the characters are working in an area that deals with manual work and water. Characters are also shown wearing scuba and fishing related gear which is relevant because for most of the film the characters are on or under the water. When not under direct sunlight in the film, the lighting is mostly darker to give the sense of suspense. The acting mostly used would be described as fear and bravery, the characters are scared of the meg and are in many risky and dangerous situations however they have to be brave and fight the meg so it doesn’t cause any more damage. Makeup used in the film mostly conveys when characters are hurt by using fake blood. The setting mostly takes place on, below, or on the shore of the water. There are brief circumstances where characters are shown in other areas but they only serve as context. The film's main events occur on the beach or in the ocean.
Sound: Diegetic sound is mainly used for the characters dialogue and the sounds made and caused by the meg, for example, sounds like growling, roaring, electronics failing, metal breaking, explosions, flickering lights, etc. By using these object sounds caused by the meg, viewers have a better understanding of the distress the characters are in and adds to the suspense. There are also many uses of non-diegetic sounds due to the films soundtrack that is used to signal for and cause suspense.
Editing: Throughout the movie the main use of editing is in the CGI. The meg is entirely made from CGI and plays a large role in the film throughout the movie. Also, greenscreen is used heavily to portray backgrounds.
Elements: Based on my research I saw that the most conventional usage of camera angles were Long shot, wide shot, high angle, and low angle, which cause suspense and show which roles are in power. The most conventional use of mis-en-scene were work clothes mixed with aquatic gear; the lighting used was darker to emphasize when the characters were underwater and to show suspense. The acting portrayed the character as fearful and brave, which is shown in the characters’ actions involving the meg. The make up showed blood when characters were injured. The conventional props were also aquatic gear and tools. The conventional settings used were underwater and on the beach. The most conventionally used sound involved diegetic sounds to represent the meg. Also, the most conventionally used form of editing was CGI, which made up the meg as a whole.
Appealing Elements: My group likes the usage of editing in this film. There is a lot of CGI and green screen usage through this movie. I think the level and quality of the editing makes the movie better than what it would be if the attention to detail wasn’t as high.
Unappealing Elements: My group finds the settings of this film unappealing. This is because the majority of the film is spent underwater or touching the ocean in some way. Due to this I feel like some parts were drawn out when they did not need to be. Though the movie revolves around a subject that is directly connected to the ocean I feel like the potential of the movie was limited by not expanding the setting a little farther.
